Flickr: A Review

Flickr (beta) is a great service and is very quickly becoming the photoblogging tool of choice for many bloggers. Very cool features, very zippy application and ease of upload coupled with a relatively usable interface makes this product a winner. Photoblogging is a personal interest and I want to try and understand what makes this product so likeable as compared to, say, Gallery and the places where I think Flickr could improve upon itself. Product features: Easy setup - It is very simple to setup a gallery for yourself, almost instantaneous if you don't want to provide much information. I like that. If an online service requires your life's story for account creation, users are lost. Mostly uncluttered homepage - Though that is quickly changing. The main items of use are clearly visible and easy to find within the thumbnails. Ease of upload and multiple photo upload - Downloadable applications for both Mac OS X and Windows make uploading multiple photos a cinch. Online forms are also available. A bookmarklet to automatically select images from a viewed webpage for upload to Flickr is incredibly useful. I am not so sure of the licence implications of that feature, but very cool otherwise. The image editing interface - Is very nicely don't. Simple image editing (rotation), ability to highlight parts of a photo with comments and various sizes for download are also cool features. Blog directly from inside Flickr - Again, nicely done. Easy to use, not much setup, simple interface and fast response. Tags - You can add tags to your photographs. In my mind, tags are simple descriptive words for your pictures and photos can be classified using those tags. Much like the GMail Labels. More on that in a minute Lots of image security features - Well, a couple that come to mind are the ability to make a picture private and the ability to classify an image as "might be offensive". Useful for those not-so-nice pictures. Social Network Integration - Only possible on a hosted service, but nicely done in Flickr (though could use some improvements). Assign groups, contacts, invite people to join etc. Full EXIF implementation - Get all your EXIF information translated and added to your photos Cameraphone/moblog ability - Send pictures to Flickr from your camera phone. All your photoblogging under one roof. RSS and ATOM feeds - Much like most other modern blogging applications, Flickr provides ATOM and RSS feeds for each user. Last but not the least, a powerful FAQ - Most questions are answered here. Where they could improve: No Albums?? - This is an opinion but Ive always missed having folders in GMail and I miss having albums in Flickr. I think tags are useful in their own right and are a very useful way of classifying pictures, but the ability to group pictures upon upload, especially if you upload a lot of pictures, is very important. If I plan to upload 300 pictures to Flickr every week, it would be impossible to keep them straight. I think Picasa does a good job with albums. Pictures can be grouped by name, date uploaded and the album in which they have been uploaded to. They can also be classified by "tags", but that's secondary to a higher order classification. More clutter? - I remember when Flickr was launched it had a pristine interface and I cannot help but think that the marketing/design departments (if they have one) have had their way with the evolving interface. "Your photos" interface - The page to view your own photos (and make modifications) needs a little more work in my opinion. Long names overlap, icons are non-descriptive and LJ - esque (Courtsey : http://weblogtoolscollection.com/)

Afterfounders - Stanford graduate students Sergey Brin and Larry Page presentedtheir project to an angel investor, they received a cheque made out to'Google'. Hotmail Founder Jack Smith got the idea of accessing e-mail via the web from acomputer anywhere in the world. When Sabeer Bhatia came up with thebusiness plan for the mail service, he tried all kinds of names endingin 'mail' and finally settled for hotmail as it included the letters"html" - the programming language used to write web pages. Hewlett Packard Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard tossed a coin to decide whether the company they founded would be called Hewlett-Packard or Packard-Hewlett. The project was designed to help use the newlywritten SQL code by IBM. The project eventually was terminated but Larry andBob decided to finish what they started and bring it to the world. Theykept the name Oracle and created the RDBMS engine. Later they kept the samename for the company. Sony It originated from the Latin word 'sonus' meaning sound, and 'sonny' aslang used by Americans to refer to a bright youngster. SUN Founded by 4 Stanford University buddies, SUN is the acronym forStanford University Network. River Linking Project :

India is a country full of natural wealth. Call it Rivers, Mountains, Forests, Desert and what not? Water is most essential for human being, but the rivers originating from Himalaya does not reach to every corner of the country. We already have various Water Disputes among between states….. (Sorry I am not going to talk about them at the moment) Upar se we have people like Amrinder Singh, who believe that rivers passing through Punjab are their bapauti.(sorry if it hurt any resident of Punjab…I do not mean this) We need a project to make a network of rivers through various canals and sub-canals so that water can reach to each and every corner of the country. Believe me this project would solve many problems; however this would cost a lot money and time too. Even our respected President Kalam has also endorsed this project. Then why the people in Congress/UPA govt. are rejecting/sidelining this ambitious project. Are they fools or lack of foresight ness or just politics? Most flood affected states are Bihar, Assam. Every year we provide a million rupees package to flood affecting states, why can’t we divert this money to this new project? What is your opinion?

Google Toolbar

When yahoo introduced it's new webpage, why should Google be far behind. Google has come out with his latest Toolbar for Internet Explorere. However there are various free Toolbars available in the market, Google toolbar is really the best. I liked the following features:

  • Customise the Google Search in choice of your language.. .. various language options are available including HINDI.
  • Search by name: In so many cases we know what company/product we are searching but we do not know about exact website. This search by name facility just ask you to enter something about the company/product, rest work is done by Google.

for example : try typing the following in the Address bar: (without quotes)

SBI

IIT Kanpur

Times of India

Railways

HCL

Infosys

This is really great. You can download Google Toolbar from here:http://toolbar.google.com/

Recently Google has introduced search inside Books also, this search would be called Google Print, this is in Beta stage at the moment. Find more information click at http://print.google.com

Ghost Busters

I would like to draw your attention a report published in hindi daily, towards PANDAs (Pooja performers) of Varanasi,Utter Pradesh,India. These PANDAs are so clever, and they know how to extract money from their client. I remember my grand father was used to say, “Beware of these pandas, they can even take your cloths off”, but what about those innocent villagers, who just falls in their hands, whether it is rituals or Ghost Busting… yes Ghost Busting. Their latest cheating option is using GHOST BUSTER activities. The person who is suffering from Ghost, can contact these pandas for ghost busting. Their fee is very high but these pandas know how to cheat, they provide written contract with client, for complete removal, that too on Stamp paper of Rs.1/- (Isn’t it Great?) These people always keep their exit options open. A person who approaches them has to provide complete information about Ghost (How can he?), secondly he has to confirm that he is not approaching any other person and has full faith in this Panda baba. After mutual agreement, followed by written agreement and financial settlement, Panda Baba performs the pooja. If ghost is gone, it’s OK, otherwise Panda Baba would be ready with another excuse. With this incident I remember another similar incident. There was a very famous politician, he was used to meet general public every morning at his residence. People were used to come to him and ask for his help. This Netaji, was keen in listening people’s problem, then he opens his diary and notes down the type of complain, person name, phone etc. The person who make complains gets satisfied and goes back home.Because his complaint was register by netaji in his personal diary. This process was continue for a long time. One day I visited the netaji and asked about the secret of his success and how does he manage to get the peoples work done. The reply given by Netaji was quite shocking, he said this is a secret and confidential, do not tell anyone. He told me that he does not do anything, After registering the complain, he never open the diary. This is human tendency not to depend on one person for his work. If the work is done(without netaji’s help),the person thinks that this work was done with the efforts of netaji, he comes back along with Sweets/Gifts. If the work is not done then? Netaji replied “Firstly people do not return, if they return, in this case, I re-register their complaint, what efforts do I need?, some writing efforts what else? The pen and diary is also provided by one of these people, what goes from my pocket? Nothing.” I was shocked to listen this.. similarly these Pandas do not perform anything, just make fool to their client and the client think that these pands have full confidence in his work, therefore he is ready for written contract. In written contract also, there are various exit options available for Pandas....... poor villagers.... can't judge this cleverness. When would we get rid of these so called babas,Pandas, Tantriks and Ojhas…. Aren’t Netaji’s are enough for looting our hard earned money? Provide your feedback….

Mirza Sahib

Mirza Sahib has been in Kuwait for a long time, almost more than 30 years, His wife has migrated to Canada, due to education of children’s, Mirza refused to leave Kuwait, by saying “zindagi beet gayi Kuwait mein.. saare dost yaar yahan hain.. ab kahan thikana badalte phire…” This is true with Mirza.. he can not get mixed up with new society now… I would say Canadians are lucky not to find him there… as for in Kuwait…. We are the sufferer. Mirza Sahib belongs to Lucknow in India, being Kanpur my hometown and quite close to Lucknow, Mirza always assumes me close to his heart. That's where the problem begins....I always become the victim of Mirza's discussion. However mirza is quite helpful and friendly, but he always considered time wasting personality in our group. In addition to this, he is notorious of using offensive language against politicians and is ready to take PUNGA with us on such irrelevant issues, he is fond of Indian politics and having extensive knowledge of this.Mirza dislike one thing, he never let anybody speak while he speak, one more thing, he does like any argument or correction to his argument on his viewpoints. He can go to any limit, if you try to interrupt him, during the discussion Mrs Mirza, before leaving for Canada, arranged a Bangladeshi Servant for Mirza, this servant whose name is Mohd. Rafiq alias Chuttan miyan, is considered as family member. I think Chuttan miyan is the best cook in the town, very loyal, has sense of humour.Chuttan miyan is very good person, except for few problems: He is fond of Indian Cinema, he knows everything about Indian Cinema, this is because of these satellite channels, which he keeps watching for whole day.Apart from this, he has seen almost all of the hindi movies ever made in India. In Kuwait, there would hardly be any video library where chuttan has not visited, all the videowalas know him by face, by entering the shop, all other customers are ignored and chuttan is attended with priority. Why? because chuttan is their movies consultant. He can tell them which movie would click or not, just by watching once. Sometime these videowalas take advice from chhuttan and arrange their stocks accordingly. In addition to this Chuttan had few shortcomings also.. e.g.: he tries to repeat the actions of last seen movies, we do not have to ask him, about last movie he saw, we can assume with his action. Just because of this mirza has applied restriction on him , not to watch Action movies like AKSHAY KUMAR etc, why? Are yaar.. last time Chuttan performed Action scene from one of action movie with mirza, by assuming himself AKSHAY KUMAR and mirza as AMRISH PURI. Mirza was sick for few weeks and had back-pain after this incident, mirza would have kicked him off, but chuttan was in good list of Mrs.Mirza, that’s why mirza could not do anything. In addition to this Chuttan performs role of Information and Broadcasting minister for Mrs. Mirza, he is expert in leaking information,Mrs. Mirza gets info about each and every development, even mirza’s daily activity report. And Chuttan is excellent in this work. So his job is safe for the time being. Let me tell you one interesting incident happened few weeks’ back.Mirza and Chuttan were used to watch movies together, Mirza was used to hold the control of Remote Control, but after this incident, mirza lost control on remote forever. Why?........read on. One day mirza and chuttan were watching a romantic hindi movie, as per the director’s instructions, Hero was supposed to appear from behind the tree, sing a song, smile with heroine, hold his arms around heroine and have a long lasting kissing. But as you know mirza, he is always possessive about heroines, so when hero appeared from behind the trees, mirza controlled himself, hero moved forward and folded his arms over heroine, mirza still tolerated with anger, but when hero tried to kiss the heroine, mirza lost control and took remote and used rewind button. Again hero came….Tree…Heroine… Arms….REWIND… Again hero….Tree…Heroine… Arms….REWIND… Again hero….Tree…Heroine… Arms….REWIND… Mirza was not letting him to go close the heroin and kissing? That was out of the question. Chuttan who had closed his eyes during the music, suddenly woke up, tried to understand the issue… when he came to know about the incident, he jumped on the remote, grabbed it. Mirza resisted, but chuttan threatened to play action movie. So mirza surrendered… Chuttan re-played the movie… mirza closed his eyes, Hero who was tired of going back.. immediate completed his pending work and chuttan again settled himself watching in movie. Since then Remote is always with Chuttan. This is the pre-condition of watching movie. More stories about Mirza and Chuttan in next post…. Keep reading
